05.31.07Jet Stream BalloonsIn 1945, the Japanese thought they could take advantage of the then newly discovred jet stream. They made 9,300 balloons, attached explosives to them and let nature take them eastwards where some made it as far as the Pacific coast of the United States. They exploded everywhere from Alaska to Northern Mexico but for the most part did little damage except for setting forest fires. The Japanese were running out of most materials by this time, and their depleted hydrogen stocks meant they released the last of these balloons in April 1945. The United States had over two-thirds of the gold stocks in the world, and half of all its monetary reserves. It produced twice as much gasoline as the rest of the world combined, and had the world's largest fleet of merchant ships.

Soppy old nostalgic verse like that in the previous posting, some of which is a little before my time, but much of it is not, and alas perhaps, I find myself agreeing with much of it too. Summer is here, and the time is right for dancing in the street, well perhaps some shagging on the beach anyway. Computers all over the house almost, and they are, touch wood, all behaving right now, even the Windows ones.
