Get to the root of the problem. When I worked on the railroad, we were taught to always follow set procedures. It's stood me well in the world of IT as well. Even a few minutes scribbling down a quick flow chart, can quickly lead you to the root of the issue.
You don't have to know the answer to everything, but you need to be able to ask the people that do know, or that knows someone that knows.
