So very few people read anything….
That’s what I read recently. It’s a really sad statement. I learned to read before I went to school, and I’ve read ever since, at least something – almost daily – and I guess I assumed that most people read. I know of a very few people that don’t, but I guess I’ve always had folks around that do.
I joined my kids at the local library at a very early age, even before they could read, and have always impressed on them that reading is a great way to learn things.
Second to that, in my opinion, is the audio route, and I’ve always found radio a much better information channel than television, as with radio, you have to listen to get the facts of the story, whereas television makes you lazy – you can half-listen and look at the pictures.
I’ve taken to listen to audio a little more lately – I receive a number of podcasts each week – some are musical, but some are informational. One I find very interesting – is nothing to do with politics or current affairs, but is a geeky little offering called ‘Slashdot Review’. It’s produced 6 days a week, lasts around ten minutes each time, and gives an audio review of what’s going on at slashdot
Currently, I’m working my way through a 15 volume BBC audio series called “This Sceptred Isle” – an audio history of Britain from 55BC to the close of the 20th Century.
My current book choice is Randall Woods – LBJ
