The Eye

No, NOT her.

The more famous one. Sir Edmund Hilary,  born in 1919, who started out as a beekeeper, and who, on this day in 1953, was the first man to reach the summit of Mount Everest in the Himalayas.

He had already climbed 20 of the highest peaks in the region before tackling Mount Everest, along with Sherpa Tensing.

After Everest, Hilary went on to Antarctic Expeditions in the last 1950’s, and then he become involved with the welfare of the Nepalese people, and spent much time there, in later life.

He died in January 2008, at home in his native New Zealand, at the age of 88.
