Today is St George’s Day in England. It’s not an national holiday there, but some folks there are campaigning to make it so.
First hoisted in 1191, the historic Flag of St. George became England’s flag in 1278. The flag is dominated by a upright, deep-red cross. When combined with the flags of Scotland and the Patron Saint of Ireland, they collectively form the UK flag, commonly, but incorrectly called the Union Jack.
Some Cornish folk are up in arms about celebrations, and called for the Mayor of Truro in Cornwall to pull out of a celebration as part of the loving Cup
The Celtic League says the event on 12 March was insensitive to Cornish people who will be celebrating the adopted patron saint of Cornwall, St Piran.
