Sunday Morning

Mom & Gigi left last night for their trip back to Nevada. It’s more than 2,000 miles all the way (to quote the popular song).

Actually once they get past Memphis and onto I-40 they’ll be following much of what was the old route 66. They left here at 1am, and are hoping to get home by Monday evening, with a stop-over somewhere in Texas.

Sitting here this morning, it’s another gray day outside, and looking like rain. It’s cooler, so I’ve turned off the a/c for a while, and open the sun-room door upstairs to get some fresh air in. You can’t beat fresh air!

It’s Labor Day weekend here, which marks the start of the end of the summer season, and when things start to close down for the winter. It’s a bit like the August Bank Holiday weekend in England. However, I always find it kind of strange here that we’re talking about the end of summer, when the temperature outside is still in the 80’s during the day, and is usually so, for at least a couple more months.

  • They will be going along much of old rte 66 once they get in Oklahoma City. Route 66 parallels I-44, the road between Oklahoma and St. louis, and then it takes a straight shot west after that. I have driven every mile of I-40 since I lived in Oklahoma City in the middle of it. I drove the west portion to visit my family in San Diego, and I drove the eastern portion going to eastern North Carolina to visit my brother and his wife.
