31 Dec 10 Goodbye 2010

Fireplace To say it wasn’t the best year of my life so far, is an understatement, and yet of course, there is always someone worse off. I could have made some better choices. Still, we’re at where we’re at, at any given time, because our life’s decisions have put us there.

The year started out OK, and now, it seems like it was ten years ago, and not twelve months.

I’ve moved twice in 2010, and not across town  - the first move was across the country, and the second was across the world.

I can’t say I didn’t enjoy a southern Californian summer; the weather was rather wonderful. I’m quite happy with the heat, and it was a welcome change from the humidity of the Carolinas.

Still I missed much of the social scene of Charleston; I had after all, lived there for six years, so felt quite at home there – although I always felt at home in Charleston, from the first time I visited. I’m glad I had the experience of  living in the lowcountry.

Would I do it again? Undoubtedly.

Sky On FireCalifornia? Yes, I think so too. I wasn’t actually living there long enough to feel truly at home, although I loved the mountains and the high desert landscapes. Although I can’t pretend it was a happy, settled and contented time there for a number of reasons, I can’t say I didn’t like California itself. I fully understand why it’s a popular place to live for so many.

Still, while it’s good to sometimes take a brief look back, and take stock, such as at a year’s end, I’m not one for doing that too often. The future is ahead for living, and the past has already been lived in.

I’ve got a number of plans for 2011, and it’s just a question of everything coming together, so that they come to fruition.

Happy New Year!

09 Jul 08 Friend Feed

There’s a lot of noise on the social media networks about… social media.

So many choices, so little time.

Which to join, and which to ignore?

My current plan is to join about as many as I can find, and then see which I find the most useful, and then let the rest whither away with lack of use. Perhaps this isn’t a very scientific way to do things, but I really don’t have the time to do in-depth reviews on each, one after the other, and with the speed that new services are appearing, I’d probably never keep up anyway.

Last week, I joined Friend Feed, and I’m finding this very useful so far. I get a daily email which is god for keeping tabs on those I follow, and there are some useful links appearing too – useful meaning that I find them interesting at least.

As you can play audio and video links from right within the page, that’s another cool bonus too. So as of now, I’m still twittering, and tumbling, and checking out friendfeed. I’m plurking less though as although it’s fun, it’s too time-consuming during the working day.

02 Apr 08 Strange Choices – Relatively Speaking

CoffeeFor most of us, drinking our favorite drink in a pleasant relaxing place makes it taste better than somewhere that isn’t. Think about it for a moment. Doesn’t that $4 latte taste better, sitting inside the coffee shop, rather than drinking it in the car while driving. In the coffee shop, yu’re more likely to be relaxing than you are doing 70mph on the interstate, or winding your way through the morning rush hour traffic downtown.

Now, take your mind back to the coffee shop again. A person that seems somewhat attractive walks in.  Then someone else who is more attractive comes in a few minutes later, and the first person doesn’t seem that good looking after all.

By the way, we’re talking about strangers here, not comparing your spouse to the good-looking neighbor you secretly lust after!

The human mind works in strange ways, when you stop and think about it!
