Murdoch & Google

My first thought at hearing that Rupert Murdoch was considering pulling his news sites from Google’s news servers was ‘Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish’.

I have had a subscription to the Wall Street Journal’s daily podcast at Audible.com for a few years, but I’m watching closely to see how the content changes since News Corporation took over.

I don’t like the way News Corporation manipulates the news. In a quest to keep up viewing figures and newspaper circulation they target much of their output at the lowest quality end. Trashy tabloid titbits, and sensationalist soundbites does not make for decent news material in my view.

Much of News Corporation’s output is full of political bias and partisan politics too. That, I have always felt is an insult. I want to be given news, and facts, that I can go on to form my own judgment about. I don’t need or want to be given news with any particular slant. I realize that Murdoch likes to appeal to the right-wing nutjobs, but I am not one of those. I’m also not a bleeding heart liberal, and would (and do) complain about biased output in that direction too.

Still, if Murdoch is able to use his wealth to manipulate the Internet and screw it up like he has with traditional media, then the outlook for fair and unbiased, quality news is bleak.

First looks – it’s bare.  That’s not a complaint though.  I suspect I’m like many folks, and have numerous add-ins installed in FF3. I’ve also got a copy of Flock, which is great for some Social Media site integration, but even noisier visually.

This makes a refreshing change to have such a wide open empty screen, and is going to take a little gettting used to.

I do miss the  cool looking Gmail Redesigned screen, and I really want my Remember the Milk integration back in my Gmail too, but hey,  the bottom line is functionality, and speed.

Where’s the google search box? You don’t need one, you simply type into the main address one.

Drag a tab off the top, and you can open a new, separate window.

I’ve not set Chrome as my default browser yet, but I’m certainly going to stick with it at the moment, and give it a run for it’s money. Money?  Oh that was metaphorically speaking, as it’s free of course!

I Suggest That Suggest Will Change SEO

With Google Suggest users are going to start to type in words for what they’re looking for, and find that Google is effectively going to hold their hand. This could mean that those sites that use long-tail keywords will need to re-think their SEO.

Why? Well the average user is going to start to type in words, and Google is going to attempt to finish it off for them, instead of the user doing it for themselves.

Think about it for a moment. You want to search for a new home on the east coast. As it goes now, you might well type in “east coast homes for sale” and see what Google gives you. With Google Suggest, as you start to type, Google will give you a list of suggestions. Therefore you won’t be finishing the search string you were going to put it, as once you get to say “east coast homes” you’ve already got a long list of suggestions, so you’ll pick one of those instead.

In my opinion it could alter the whole dynamics of SEO in a fundamental way.
