19 Sep 08 Comcast to install throttling

Comcast’s plan:

Customers’ accounts must exceed a certain percentage of their upstream or downstream (both currently set at 70%) bandwidth for longer than a certain period of time, currently set at fifteen minutes.

A significant amount of normal Internet usage by our customers does not last that long. For example, most downloads would have completed within that time, and the majority of streaming and downloading will not exceed the threshold to be eligible for congestion management. And the majority of longer-running applications, such as VoIP, video conferencing, and streaming video content (including HD streaming on most sites) will not exceed these thresholds either.

I still think it sucks. It’s about time that Comcast built up their networks to a specification that allows not only for present usage but near future usage too. More and more data of all kinds is going to be transmitted via the Internet, much of which isn’t illegal P2P either.

I watch video, stream audio (internet radio stream). Comcast wants to dissuade its users from these kind of activities as they want subscribers to sped huge amounts of money on ever more premium rate TV channels.

With ISPs with an attitude like Comcast, it’s no wonder the US is 16 or 17th in the world league table for Internet speed and reliability.

25 Jul 08 Bye Bye, The Kat & Eye

I started The Kat & Eye Jukebox back in September 2005, and we’ve been on the air since that time. However, all good things must come to an end, and we’ve decided not to renew our Broadcasting Subscription with Live365.com this month.

It’s been fun along the way, and it’s taught us a lot about running an Internet Radio station (although like most things in life, there’s always more to learn.

We’ve moved on since then. We helped to set up Radio Free Charleston, and we’re forging ahead with NAB Radio, which is now broadcasting 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with a content largely composed of indie music of all genres, and interspersed with live shows.

It was possible to do live broadcasting with our Live 365 package, but running our own set up from our own dedicated computers, and server stream means we can do much more.  Therefore we’ve decided to funnel all our energies into NAB Radio.

We hope that those of you that listen to The Kat  & Eye Jukebox, will tune into NAB Radio instead (hopefully you already do anyway). We’ve got lots of plans for the future with NAB Radio.

The Kat & Eye website is currently still running, and we’re still offering online CD reviews and purchases from the site, and although we’ve not decided what to do with that yet, we might integrate that into NAB Radio’s site instead, which is currently undergoing a revamp.

Meanwhile The Kat & Eye is on the air for a few more days, so you’ve still got a chance to tune in, and say Bye Bye to The Kat & Eye.

Jason Wilber Turns Tables On Songwriter

In an ironic turn of events, Canadian songwriter Ron Hynes has found himself the subject of someone else’s song. Jason Wilber, who is the protégé of singer-songwriter John Prine, penned the song “Watching Picasso” after seeing Hynes, a Newfoundland native and five-time East Coast Music Award winner, perform at the Ship Inn in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Wilber stopped by the small pub at the behest of Jimmy Rankin on a night off during a November 2004 tour of Eastern Canada with Prine.

“I knew Jimmy had great taste in music, but to be honest after he lead us into this dark little noisy bar, I guess I wasn’t expecting much” says Wilber, who has been performing professionally for 23 years. “But once Ron started singing, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. After about 20 minutes I noticed that my mouth had been hanging open since he’d started singing! I was just completely blown away by Ron’s artistry and the depth of his songwriting. It was such an inspiring experience that I went back to my hotel room that night and started writing about it.”

In the song “Watching Picasso”, which appears on Wilber’s new CD Lazy Afternoon, he describes the scene at the Ship Inn that night and compares Hynes to some of the great masters of fine art, while lamenting the obliviousness of the audience to the masterpieces before them. A clip of the song can be heard at: http://www.jasonwilber.com/picasso

Jason Wilber will be playing lead guitar for John Prine on his 2006-2007 tour. In addition to releasing five CDs featuring his own songs, Wilber has also played lead guitar for other notable artists like Prine, Hal Ketchum, Greg Brown, Iris DeMent, Todd Snider, and Carrie Newcomer. His work with John Prine includes the 2006 Grammy Award winning album Fair & Square.
