10 Oct 09 Anti? Not Really, Just Not Pro Either!

It was recently said to me that I was surely anti-Apple as I didn’t have an iPod, a Mac or use iTunes.

Well, although I do have some computers running Windows, I also run Linux as well on others. Oh, and I don’t have any kind of Zune either or an XBox.

It’s not that I am against these products, but that I simply don’t need them.

I’ve gone down the Windows route for nearly a quarter century. It’s been a lousy OS much of the time, only really getting better when XP came along. Even so, it’s the only Microsoft product I have that I’ve paid for. No, I haven’t pirated the rest, I simply don’t use them. I find OpenOffice to be a fine product and it does everything I need.

I do less and less local document processing these days anyway with much more being cloud based. Same goes for email. I simply can’t justify $00′s of dollars on MS Office. I don’t have the bother of sync issues either.

As for the audio players, I have a perfectly good Blackberry Curve that provides me with reasonable audio and video playback, so why spend money on and carry about another device? It also links with my bluetooth car audio system.

So no, I’m not anti-Apple,or even Microsoft I just don’t need the products.

Oh, by the way, I didn’t write this blog post on an Apple, Microsoft or Linux system. Nope. The Blackberry scored again!

I’m not a teenager. However, I’ve had a life long interest in music, and it’s my number one relaxation activity, besides reading.

CD Spindle I’m always playing it. I almost never watch TV. I don ‘t have an iTunes account, or an iPod but as I type this, I’m listening to mp3s on my Sansa m240, which I’ve downloaded from Napster during the last week. Sansa Express

Interestingly, although, I’ve not purchased any CDs for at least 3-4 years, I do, however, get sent a lot of promo CDs, as I run an internet radio station, NAB Radio, with the accent on showcasing indie bands of all genres.

sansa m240For me, as a listener,  it’s not the cost so much as the availability. I want to hear something now, and get the one song I want. I don’t need to go to the mall, or get a CD full of songs that I may already have most of, and perhaps have to wait 2-3 weeks for the store to get it in.

Finally, I guess digital is better for the environment, in the long time, and as long as everyone gets paid for their work, does the medium matter?

The 78rpm lasted around 25-30 years, as did the 45, and the 33rpm LP, and the CD is 25 years old next year, so it’s perhaps time for it to bow out.

Finally for those of you that are feeling all nostalgic, I grew up with a Dansette and a pile of 45s. Yes, it was fun, and it was good to hold those new 7 inchers in your hand, but, when I last played them (I still have around 1500 of them in my mother’s attic), I realized what a pain in the rear it was to get and down every three minutes to put on a new one. So much easier to load a few hours worth  into Amarok, or Winamp or whatever your player of choice is on your computer.

08 Nov 07 That Time Again

EyebeeIt’s 1.15 am in Fortress Eyebee. It’s that time again when I shall wend my merry way to the land of nod. Well to the bedroom for a read, or perhaps one or two of the audiobooks I’ve recently downloaded. Talking of which, I think I’ll have to bite the bullet and get an MP3 player.

I don’t need any of this expensive iPod stuff. No Siree. I was thinking of the Sandisk Sansa m240. It’s got a 1GB of memory, which will be fine for listening to audiobooks on. That’s about all I’ll use it for really. I dunno. I almost clicked BUY at Amazon, but I’ll sleep on it. I always do that. NOT an impulse buyer me. Shoot, I’ll debate over a pair of socks for a week. Well not quite, but you get my drift. Actually socks last me for ever, as I’m in sandals ten months of the year, and we don’t wear socks with sandals do we? No we don’t. Well old Mr Smith down the street might, but I don’t. What you think I am, an old fart?
