It’s a free country right? You can disagree with the Government if you like, and you won’t (in theory at least) get throw in jail. However, whatever you do, make sure you’ve got your pants pulled up first in some cities. At least one judge has seen sense over that, and ruled it unconstitutional after a 17 year old was arrested in Riviera Beach, Florida, for exposing 4 inches of boxer shorts, due to wearing loose fitting jeans, and spent the night in jail.

Now, I was raised at a time when, as a kid, I had to wear a collar and tie if we went to visit relatives, especially on a Sunday. I can clearly remember my father complaining when someone came into our local community club on a Sunday wearing jeans. However, having to dress up when going out with family members or having a club dress code is completely different to telling a citizen going about their business how they can and can’t dress.

Personally, I think the saggy jeans look untidy, slovenly, and well, crap. I also think that baseball caps worn backwards look stupid too. However, it should be everyone’s right to dress however they darn well please, as long as they are not exposing themselves.

Talking of which, it seems it’s OK for upskirt photographs of celebrities wearing NO underwear to be flashed (pun intended) around the world, but not OK to show underwear itself.

Oh, it’s not only the backwaters that are looking at such silly ideas either. Dallas, TX, and Atlanta, GA, are also considering similar proposals.

What’s next? No sunglasses after dark? No shirts carrying logos of foreign companies? Where does it end?

29 May 08 Liberty Or Democracy?

Stars & Stripes Isn’t it the same thing? Doesn’t one lead to the other? Well not quite. No? Why not?

In an ideal democracy, we’d get to vote on everything wouldn’t we? We’d get to vote for tax levels, for local and national laws, for school boards, police chiefs etc. So far, so good?

If you live in a condominium community, or a housing association, you probably get a vote on various aspects of how your community is run, and how your maintenance or regime fees get spent. Sounds fair, doesn’t it?

Let’s take that local community voting one step further however. How about if you were told that you couldn’t choose your spouse, but that the local community would take a vote on who would marry each other. They would of course (?) base it on good sense, perceived compatibility, a desire to have a peaceful neighborhood, and take into account you and your chosen partners future happiness. In other words all done in good faith, by your local governing body, with everyone’s best interests at heart.

Not realy such a good idea is it? Very democratic, although your liberty to marry who you choose went out the window.

So, democracy, and liberty, are clearly NOT the same thing are they?

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness – wrote Thomas Jefferson. So which is it? What do we want most? Democracy, or liberty? There’s really no contest is there?
