23 Apr 09 Happy St. George’s Day

Have You Got The Bottle? The Irish have St Patrick’s Day; The United States has Indepence Day and the English have St. Georges Day.

St. George is the patron saint of England. This from Wikipedia:

A traditional custom at this time was to wear a red rose in one’s lapel, though with changes in fashion this is no longer common. Another custom is to fly or adorn the St George’s Cross flag in some way: pubs in particular can be seen on April 23 festooned with garlands of St George’s crosses. However, the modern association of the St George’s Cross with sports such as football, cricket and rugby means that this tradition is rare outside this context. It is customary for the hymn “Jerusalem” to be sung in cathedrals, churches and chapels on St George’s Day, or on the Sunday closest to it.

If you don’t have a red rose, then have some honest to goodness English Real Ale instead!

According to Wikipedia the term was coined fairly recently, but refers to the day after Thanksgiving, and serves as the unofficial start to the Christmas shopping season.

Myself, if I am working, which I often am, then that’s what I do! Otherwise, even if I have the day off, I avoid the stores if I can.

I dislike crowds, and all that pushing and shoving is not me at all. I also dislike having to stand in line for more than a few minutes. I’m very much an ‘in and out’ shopper once I do go to store.

I mostly shop online these days in any case, unless there is something I urgently need, or unless I want to get a ‘hands on’ look at a product first.

I’ll be the first to admit, I have no loyalty to any particular store, online outlet or brand. If I’m buying a bigger ticket item, I’ll take my time to carefully review the item I am after from a number of sources.

Right now, there isn’t anything I desperatly need, and I’m not one for spending money for the skae of it, even if I have it to spare. It’s not a bargain then, is it?

Today too, has seen a tragedy, that quite frankly didn’t surprise me, when a Long Island Wal-Mart worker was apparently trampled to death by hoardes of bargain hunters when he opened the doors of the store where he was working at 5.03 am this morning.

Oscar-winning actor Paul Newman has died at his home in Connecticut at the age of 83. He starred in around 60 films in a career that spanned five decades.

He starred in a number of movies, such as Cat On A Hot Tin Roof (1958); The Hustler (1961); Cool Hand Luke (1967), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969); The Sting (1973); The Towering Inferno (1974) and The Color Of Money (1986).

He didn’t actually get an Oscar until he won Best Actor in The Color Of Money, although he was nominated many times.

He was a co-founder of Newman’s Own, a food company from which Newman donated all profits and royalties to charity. As of May 2007, these donations had exceeded US$220 million. (source: Wikipedia)

He quit acting in 2007, and pulled out of directing a project earlier this year, citing health issues. He leaves a widow (Joanne Woodward, to whom he had been married 50 years this past January) and five daughters.
