Patrick McGoohan, who was both a star in, and a co-writer of The Prisoner, has died at the age of 80.
McGoohan was born in New York, and moved with his parents to Ireland, and then to England.
He got his acting break while working as a stage manager, and filling in for a sick actor.
His first major TV role was in ‘Danger Man’ when he played a secret agent.
He became involved with The Prisoner project which went on to become a seventeen part series, and which was originally aired between October 1967 and February 1968 on ITV in the UK.
He won two Emmy awards working on the TV series ‘Columbo’
He also starred in a number of films, including Ice Station Zebra, and Silver Streak. In 1995, he played King Edward Longshanks in ‘Braveheart’.
At the time of his death he had, to all intents and purposes, retired, and was living in Los Angeles.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joan Drummond McGoohan
