Three twelve-man squads, lead by NCO’s, mad up a platoon.

Three platoons, each led by a lieutenant, made up a company.

Three companies, each led by a captain, made a batallion.

Three batallions, each under a major, or lieutenant-colonel, made a regiment.

Three regiments, each commanded by a colonel, made up a division.

Each division was commanded by a general.
